Lalabye Baby is kicking off 2017 with a brand new exclusive limited edition print: Reflections. Reflections is a stunning scenescape print featuring northern woodland animals silhouetted against the Aurora Borealis (the Northern Lights).
Trees, moose, deer, wolves, and a soaring eagle stand silhouetted against dancing curtains of light adorning the starry night sky. Bands of green, purple, aqua, and blue stretch across the scenescapes, and tiny, twinkling stars catch the light of a brilliant moon peeking through the haze. Each silhouette is mirrored in a reflection below it, as if the animals are standing at the shores of a glassy lake.
Inspiration: The Northern Lights
This past summer, I saw an article about the Aurora Borealis and was inspired to find a way to transform its beauty into an exclusive diaper print. Seeing the Northern Lights has been on my bucket list for some time, and a few of our customers from Alaska had mentioned that they’d love to see a diaper featuring northern animals like moose and wolves.
The Aurora Borealis is named after the mythical Roman goddess of the dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for the northern wind, Boreas. The natural light show is a result of electrons in a solar wind colliding with the Earth’s upper atmosphere and magnetic field. The elements that the electrons collide with in the atmosphere determine what colors we see: oxygen (green) or nitrogen (blues and purples). Violets and crimsons are rare and require a great deal of energy to produce. The colors are also affected by altitude: green (150 miles high), blue (up to 60 miles high), and purple and violet (above 60 miles). Alaska and northern Canada offer the best views, but Norway, Sweden, and Finland also have popular vantage points. Cold and crisp winter air create the most opportune time to view the lights, with September, October, March, and April as some of the best months for observing.
As our customers have come to appreciate, attention to detail and carefully handcrafted artistry is part of what makes our prints so unique and beautiful. This print went through many, many revisions before it became the jewel that it is today. To give you an idea, we began working on this right after Seven Seas released at the end of the summer last year! Our amazing designer worked diligently to bring our vision to life, and it was her artistry that really brought this print together.
When we began working on this print, our designer first created these colorful light displays by hand using watercolor! The results, as you can see, are stunning.
We chose our northern animals and landscapes to silhouette, but our test print still didn’t look quite right. After a few color changes and an amazing suggestion from one of the Lalabye Mamas (thanks, Emily!) to turn the images into reflections of themselves, the final product was born, and we couldn’t be happier.
